AYA Entry Form 2018

As you may know, the Copper Country was recently hit by severe flooding which has caused the closure of many beaches throughout the area due to high levels of bacteria in the water. We have been in touch with Health Department personnel about the closures. While no one can predict the future, we have been advised that the closures will likely be lifted by the date of the tournament as long as we don’t get any more serious flooding. We will make a final decision on Monday July 23rd regarding rescheduling or alternate locations for the tournament if the closures have not been lifted by then. The early bird deadline for the reduced price of $80 is July 21st however if you register before the early bird deadline and if the tournament is rescheduled to a date that you cannot be available, we will refund your full registration fee.

This year we have instituted a few format/rule changes.

Most notably:

1. Walleye are the only eligible fish this year. In prior years we have included bass and panfish as an option, primarily due to low walleye populations in the Portage and Torch system and a desire to allow teams to choose either category depending on the expected level of “action”, considering the youth focus of the event. Thanks to continued stocking from the DNR in partnership with CCWA, the walleye population is believed to be recovered to a point where a good day is likely (although of course can never be expected) even when only targeting walleye.

2. The DNR has instituted an experimental slot limit for Portage and Torch lakes starting the 2018 fishing season. We have decided to allow the equivalent of a one-man limit of fish per boat. This means that each team can weigh a total of 5 walleye but only one walleye over 23 inches will be allowed in the bag for the day. Consistent with previous years, once a fish is weighed it is counted and cannot be replaced but teams may keep up to the legal limit of fish in their live-wells during the tournament. That is, teams can sort fish on the water within what the law allows and can weigh fish any time but can only weigh a total of 5 fish, of which only one can be over 23 inches.
